Psalm 139

For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.

¹You have searched me,^(A) Lord,
    and you know^(B) me.
²You know when I sit and when I rise;^(C)
    you perceive my thoughts^(D) from afar.
³You discern my going out^(E) and my lying down;
    you are familiar with all my ways.^(F)
⁴Before a word is on my tongue
    you, Lord, know it completely.^(G)
⁵You hem me in^(H) behind and before,
    and you lay your hand upon me.
⁶Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,^(I)
    too lofty^(J) for me to attain.

⁷Where can I go from your Spirit?
    Where can I flee^(K) from your presence?
⁸If I go up to the heavens,^(L) you are there;
    if I make my bed^(M) in the depths, you are there.
⁹If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
    if I settle on the far side of the sea,
¹⁰even there your hand will guide me,^(N)
    your right hand^(O) will hold me fast.
¹¹If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
    and the light become night around me,”
¹²even the darkness will not be dark^(P) to you;
    the night will shine like the day,
    for darkness is as light to you.

Ezekiel 39:21-29

²¹“I will display my glory among the nations, and all the nations will see the punishment I inflict and the hand I lay on them.^(A) ²²From that day forward the people of Israel will know that I am the Lord their God. ²³And the nations will know that the people of Israel went into exile for their sin, because they were unfaithful to me. So I hid my face from them and handed them over to their enemies, and they all fell by the sword.^(B) ²⁴I dealt with them according to their uncleanness and their offenses, and I hid my face from them.^(C)

²⁵“Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will now restore the fortunes of Jacob^[a]^(D) and will have compassion^(E) on all the people of Israel, and I will be zealous for my holy name.^(F) ²⁶They will forget their shame and all the unfaithfulness they showed toward me when they lived in safety^(G) in their land with no one to make them afraid.^(H) ²⁷When I have brought them back from the nations and have gathered them from the countries of their enemies, I will be proved holy through them in the sight of many nations.^(I) ²⁸Then they will know that I am the Lord their God, for though I sent them into exile among the nations, I will gather them^(J) to their own land, not leaving any behind.^(K) ²⁹I will no longer hide my face^(L) from them, for I will pour out my Spirit^(M) on the people of Israel, declares the Sovereign Lord.^(N)”

The Certainty of God’s Promise

¹³When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself,^(A) ¹⁴saying, “I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.”^[a]^(B) ¹⁵And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.^(C)

¹⁶People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument.^(D) ¹⁷Because God wanted to make the unchanging^(E) nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised,^(F) he confirmed it with an oath. ¹⁸God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie,^(G) we who have fled to take hold of the hope^(H) set before us may be greatly encouraged. ¹⁹We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,^(I) ²⁰where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf.^(J) He has become a high priest^(K) forever, in the order of Melchizedek.^(L)
